So, we all know Phoenix can be pretty warm during the summer. And while it’s a “dry heat”, it’s still toasty. But, if you grab a Southern Airways flight to Show Low, you can find some amazing relief.
But before we talk climate, let’s discuss how a town came to be named Show Low. Well, it is the west and as legend goes the name was the result of a marathon poker game between Corydon E. Cooley and Marion Clark. The two men were equal partners in a 100,000-acre ranch; however, the partners determined that there was not enough room for both of them in their settlement, and agreed to settle the issue over a “Loser Leaves Town” game of “Seven Up”.
Apparently, this game also went on with no end in sight. So, Clark said, “If you can show low, you win.” In response, Cooley turned up the two(deuce) of clubs (the lowest possible card) and replied, “Show low it is.” The town’s main street is named “Deuce of Clubs” in remembrance.
Now, Show Low is a gem of a town located in the White Mountains, especially in the summer. With highs averaging in the low to mid-80s before plummeting to the mid-40s and sometimes 30s, it is the perfect place to escape the heat.
