It is known for fishing, sailing regattas, boating and as a commercial and cruise ship port. Although it is one of the largest vacation destinations in the area during the summer months, the wintertime also provides some unique experiences such as ice fishing, snowmobiling and plenty of frozen exploration.
The earliest known resident of the county was Edward Fitzgerald, a fur trader, and trapper who visited the Muskegon area in 1748 and reportedly died there, believed to be buried in the vicinity of White Lake. The settlement of Muskegon began in 1837 when the Muskegon Township was organized as a subdivision of Ottowa County. Throughout its history, Muskegon has been an essential part of the surrounding area providing lumber, tank engine manufacturing and more. Today, it is described as a progressive city that delivers scenic forests, beautiful beaches and culture.
Frosted Hiking – Grab your snowshoes or cross-country skis to explore miles of snow-covered hiking trails. Muskegon delivers over 60 miles worth of trails through scenic frosted forests to explore.
Take in a Hockey Game – Is any trip to Michigan complete without the hockey game experience? The Muskegon area has 2 hockey teams you can cheer on, one belonging to the USHL (United States Hockey League) and the other to MIHL (Michigan Independence Hockey League). There is nothing like cheering on the home team in this action-packed, high-intensity sport.
The Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park – During the Winter you can experience several activities at the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park including ice skating, snowshoeing, skiing and, of course, luging.
Southern’s service between Muskegon and Chicago will be flown on the Cessna Grand Caravan, the same aircraft that Southern uses on all its routes east of the Mississippi River.
