What do you look for when buying Hawaiian coffee? And where can you buy some? We have the answers:
What to look for when buying Hawaiian coffee
Purity Coffee labeled as a “blend” contains beans sourced from different origins—including coffee from outside Hawaii. Read labels if you want 100% coffee from Hawaii or a select geographic region like Kona or Ka’u.
Grades The Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture established a coffee-grading standard distinguishing the quality of green (unroasted) coffee beans. Some brands include these grades on packaging. At the top is Extra Fancy, followed by Fancy, No. 1, Select, Prime, and so on.
Peaberry comes from coffee cherries that contain only one bean—instead of the usual two. It is only five percent of the crop with its own flavor profile.
Estate Grown Coffees labeled as “estate” are those produced in entirety by one plantation—from tree to packaging.
