My family has an unconventional Thanksgiving tradition we will be starting this year. It will continue to be a day we reflect on everything we have and everything that we are grateful for yet it will be a day that will bring a bit of diversity and exposure of American subcultures to our dinner table. Instead of the traditional turkey, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole and other Thanksgiving staples, we will be serving menu items from different regions across the United States. Think of it like a potluck, sampling dishes from around the country that are appropriate for the season. Take a look at some of our favorite recipes from the regions that Southern Airways flies to that will be on our dinner table this Thanksgiving.
Hawaii – Kalua Pua’a
Kalua Pua’a is a long-standing Hawaiian recipe and is often served at luaus. It is an easy recipe with simple ingredients that pack a big flavor.
Mid-Atlantic – Bay Spiced Roast Turkey
If it just doesn’t feel like Thanksgiving without a turkey, then this Eating Well Bay Spiced Turkey recipe is for you. With those classic Mid-Atlantic flavors of bay, mustard and sweet paprika, you will escape on a journey through Maryland with just one bite.
California – Haircot Vert and White Beans in a Shallot VinaigretteÂ
This elegant, bright side dish brings sunny California to your Thanksgiving table. Visit Blythe’s Blog for this recipe that features green and white beans in a tangy, yet sweet dressing.
The Rockies – Rocky Mountain Gorgonzola Potatoes
This delicious side dish recipe by Jam Hands will have you excited for those Thanksgiving leftovers. Tender, roasted potatoes covered in a hot gorgonzola sauce will be the perfect side item for this regional Thanksgiving celebration.
New York – Waldorf Salad
Few things scream New York like the famous Waldorf Salad. A chilled dish that can be served as a side or appetizer that provides a crunchy texture and classic fall flavor profile.
Southern Region – Bacon Collard Greens
Collard greens are just about as Southern as it gets. This Southern side dish is a crowd-pleaser when sprinkled with crispy bacon. Pro Tip: Glaze the bacon with maple syrup before topping off the collard greens. The sweetness will bring a nice balance to the entire dish.
New England – Boiled Cider Pie
This New England classic needs to be brought back! A pie made out of one of autumn’s favorite drinks, sparkling apple cider. Visit Life Hacker for this New England favorite.
